North American P-51D Mustang 44-72035|Peter Teichman\Hanger 11
Designed in 1940 by North American Aviation as long range fighter and fighter-bomber for use during World War II the P51 Mustang later went on to serve in many conflicts including the Korean war and was used by over 30 nations. The first batch of Mustangs were originally built in the US to a British specification for the RAF. The early Allison engines lacked power especially in a climb due to the absence of supercharger which limited their use to armed tactical reconnaissance. When in 1942 they were fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine they were transformed into what is considered one of the best US fighters of all time and affectionately became known as the “Cadillac of the skies”.
44-72035 is a P-51D-20-NA model, built at North American’s Inglewood facility in California and was assigned to the 332nd Fighter Group. The 332nd became very famous as the first all African-American Fighter Group known as “The Tuskegee Airmen”, although at the time they were referred to them as “The Red Tails”.
After the end of WWII 44-72035 transferred to the Air National Guard before being released from the military in October 1956. After 24 years with Whiteman Enterprises in California and 8 years in South America in August 1989 she was exported to France, where she was owned and operated by Jacques Bourret of Aero Retro based at St Rambert. When looking for a colour scheme for the P-51, Jacques came upon the photo of a Mustang named “Jumpin Jacques” and could not resist adopting this as the new scheme. The original “Jumpin Jacques” was flown by Lt Jacque E Young of the 3rd Fighter Squadron, 3rd Air Commando Group, a unit that operated out of the Philippines.
She still carries evidence of her battle scars with repairs just behind the pilot’s position on both sides of the fuselage, and puncture repairs to the fin.
